The roller coaster

We're on a roller coaster ride that just won't end. We're hanging on, just waiting for it to come to a safe stop. Little Drew (Lori and Kram's son) is having such a time with his blood. Today is his eighth transfusion this summer (his last being just five days ago). It is a balancing act of red blood cells, neutrophils, and platelets. Nothing is stable. When one goes up, the others go down. Today, they are all down. It looks like he is headed for a splenectomy - they just haven't decided whether it should be partial or full. We've done splenectomies before - but before we had more confidence the surgery would correct the problem. Now, we just don't know. Such a worry...
